I would put more linux distros in there, but I doubt many of you use them.

Vista. It'll work better when I get an extra gig of RAM, I swear.

Hahaha, Vista working better.
I would vote for Ubuntu but sadly there's no software for my wireless card that's compatible with it.

Windows XP, and not looking forward to getting something with Vista... I hate it. But at least I'll still have my desktop, which will remain an XP for as long as I can keep it. Sadly, I'mma need a laptop sometime soon.

But I'm looking forward to having a touch-screen computer, that's for sure.

Yay for XP!

I'm not some computer nerd who studies up on computers and which OS is better than the next, so could somebody explain to be why Vista has such a bad reputation?

From what I understand, compatibility issues.

A reason many gamers dislike the transition from XP to Vista is the fact that Vista takes up more energy and power to run the same as on XP, if I remember correctly, which leads to a hightened requirement for the same level of gameplay.

The company my father works for has all their computers hooked up on a connection, but they can't network Vista to work, so Vista is pretty much out the window for them. Hell, Microsoft has issues with Vista. Vista has many software compatibility problems, it's just not worth it sometimes.

What really pisses me off about Vista is that they are forcing you to get it if your computer dies.

When you buy a new Microsoft computer, guess what OS it comes with?

I know, Vista... I'mma be very careful with the computer I have, the last thing I wanna do is have to buy a new computer with Vista on it. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, having the latest data on a computer, but with the screw-up that is Vista, and now they're taking down all support for XP I think. Perhaps not support, but just not making them anymore, but they are giving up on XP...

I only pray what Microsoft is currently working on will be better. If not the company is on a steep road heading straight for the dung-wagon.

Aren't they remaking XP?

It'll probably be Vista in a cunning disguise.

I haven't heard anything on the development, but from what I hear Microsoft had already been working on Vista's replacement long before Vista was finished. (In my mind, Vista is still a long way from finish, though. Too many problems.)

If they are re-making XP, it'd be interesting. I don't see how they would do it, but I don't have the greatest imagination, either.

I have three computers in my room.

The one I use the most runs on Mac OS X, Tiger.

I have two PC's. One's twice as fast as the other; though only slightly older than the other.
The faster one runs on Windows XP, and is able to dual-boot with Ubuntu 7. (I never use Ubuntu on that computer anymore...)

The slower one, formerly Windows ME, I believe, was upgraded to Windows XP. It used to be my dad's, but he gave it to me (he now has a iMac running OS X Leopard) and I made it a full Ubuntu computer. It's a lot faster now.

The UAC function of Vista really, really gets to me. I don't want to have to sift through seventy-three boxes just to start the installation of a game. I know you can turn it off, but a lot of people aren't technology inclined. They won't know where to look for it, and probably wouldn't want to risk messing around with things.

I don't know how they did it, but Microsoft even managed to make their software patronising.

The Mac, thanks to its stability (95% of my stuff doesn't crash!) and speed, is great for playing Mac-capable games and browsing the web like I do now, video editing (light or heavy), and Photoshop. Surprisingly, the Microsoft Office for OSX is a lot better than Office 2007 for Windows.

The faster PC is for web design, and for playing the majority of my games. I keep a server between my three computers to keep an easy method of transferring files between the computers. ie. I transfer the stuff I made in Photoshop for a website to the PC, which has Dreamweaver/Flash. The faster PC also houses all my music on the server; though, I am thinking of reconsolidating my music library over to the slower PC, so I can put more games on the faster PC.

The slower PC is my Linux guinea pig.

Stay. Please.
I'll see what I can do.

Small? This forum has twice the activity of XGen, you know. And if the majority of veteran members are willing to use the Shift key and spend the two extra seconds to type out proper chains of thought, that's intelligent to me.

Guys, I'm still pretty upset that I'm small and unintelligent.

Judging from your post count and post content, you're anything but small and insignificant.

/me virtual huggles KalashnikoV in a totally heterosexual manner

Are the last five a type of OS?
In a sense, yes. They're what you'd call 'distros', or distributions of Linux. To my limited knowledge, they're all based off Linux, and have fairly significant differences between each other, such as user-friendliness, (either little or none) security (either secure or really secure), and uh... uh... I dunno.

And yes, this forum has tons of activity. This is a very slow time apparently. But on some days, without trying to be a post-whore, I can get 50-100 posts.

Given, not everyone possesses your prodigious ability to post with such frequency and whimsy. You did get your first hundred posts on your first day here, didn't you?

You're right on most parts. Except all modern distros are based off of Unix, which is an old-school OS. Some guys didn't want to pay the 200 dollars for each new OS, so they created linux, a free version of Unix. And every single Linux Distro is based off that kernel. They do have their differences, but they're not all that significant. At the core of the whole thing, they're the same, but most of the differences are what is compatible with what OS (Most software can be used on all of them, but some hardware isn't recognized by certain distros), what kind of graphical interface the distro uses (KDE, GNOME, ect) and how much power it uses. It's kind of like XP vs. Vista, in a a sense.
