It's actually not as hard people think, so long as you take it slowly. If you're English I could suggest a fantastic website for actually *buying* a banjo, of course if you aren't that's no use. But if you're ever interested, give me a shout and can suggest websites/good books to learn from

Would you like some tips on how to not waste time when your starting out on the guitar? In other words, tips that will help you improve while you practice, instead of practicing in an inefficient way that will slow your progress. (They helped me out a lot)

Okay, but first, what is your main goal? (For example, do you want to be a soloist, or do you want to come up with rhythms, or both?)

EDIT: I am more of a soloist than a rhythm kind of guy, so take this advice with a grain of salt. The best way to improve is to get a teacher. Just wanted to say this first, in case what follows is hard to understand.
Alright. Before I start, I think the best way to become a rhythm guitarist is learn songs that you like. www.911tabs.com is good for that. If you want to come up with your own rhythms, the first thing you should do is learn power chords (it was the first kind of chord I learned, and they are the easiest to play). However, I strongly suggest you learn songs that you like first, so you can get a concept of rhythms first. Anyway, powerchords are 2 note chords that use the root note and the 5th of a chord. For example, an "A" power chord would played by having your first finger on the fifth fret of the low E string (the lowest (in pitch) string), and your third finger on the 7th fret of the A string (the string next to it).
The great thing about power chords is that you can now move that anywhere. You could slide it up so now your playing the 7th and the 9th on the E and A respectively, or slide it down so you play the 3rd and the 5th on the E and A respectively. Or you can use different strings, such as the 5th on the A and the 7th on the D.
You can mess around with powerchords if you want to create your own rhythms, but again, I strongly suggest you learn other people's songs first. Try something simple first. (Sublime is a good starting point, simple rhythms that sound good)
Don't limit yourself to rythym or soloing. It's retarded. As a guitarist you need to be able to do both pretty well (though you can specialize, especially in the beginning you're not good enough at either to start doing that so learn both evenly unless it interferes with your interest in playing. If soloing is something you hate to do don't, but don't just learn rythym if you like soloing a bit too).
Get a teacher.
To begin though:
Learn basic open string and power chords, learn the minor pentatonic as a base for soloing, start learning theory. Learn, Practice, Memorize. Learn some interesting and easy songs if you want (I never really did, and have a total of 3 solos, the intro to stairway to heaven and one chord song under my belt for covers but it can't hurt and can be fun).

Haha, yeah, I dont really learn songs to cover. Just improvised blues solos mostly and some chord progressions.

There's a lot required behind it. You have to learn scales, notes, keys, and finger positioning. All of that, and some of it is freestyle soloing. It's pretty hard.

I know, but I have lots of time to do it.
If you're serious, get a teacher. Period.
He can help more than everything on the internet can.
Don't give up, play every day if only for a few minutes, don't get too frustrated with theory and how weird it seems at first.
Everything comes eventually.
