Well, on further investigation, it says it hasn't been proven yet, and traces of it have been only found in Washington.

I don't think Washington is a major tomato supplier, so it's still not an issue.

1) You were about 2 weeks late
2) They have healthy tomatoes out now
3) You can't die from e coli

The only way you would die is if you were an infant or extremely old. The only bad thing about e coli is bloody diarrhea.

You CAN die from E coli. The thing is there are many, many different strains of E coli. I know 7 people from Walkerton that died because of contaminated drinking water. The whole freaking town got sick.

So, what have we learned? Yes, you CAN die from E coli. (not just the elderly or infirm) You should wash ALL the fruits and vegetables you eat RAW and only US tomatoes were bad. Us Canadians aren't filthy animals, we wash our food.
