IRC is a great way to communicate with friends, and people you don't know without having to go to *** chat rooms or knowing email addresses. And it's pretty simple to boot.
Okay, to IRC all you need is a client. You can google a java IRC applet (Those kind of suck) or you can download
Chatzilla (FF only)
X-chat (I reccomend it, simple, easy to use interface)
BersIRC (Meh)
mIRC (I've heard good things, I personally don't like it)
Now, once you download one of the clients, you're ready to go. You can go to many different servers. Let's start of with efnet. You do this by entering
/server efnet
Once you're in the server, type
/list
to get a list of the rooms. There are thousands of rooms, so pick one that looks like something you can get into. Then type
/join #room
And you're set. You can change your name by
/nick yournick
Now, efnet is just one of the many servers. There are many many servers, most of them dedicated to organizations (Such as wraith, /b/, and thing like that)
Now, if you want to make your own room on a server (Not your own server, this requires some technical knowhow, any chimp can make a room) you simply type in
/join #whatyourroomnameis
Now you're ready to go. Now you have to learn some lingo.
*gline: Temporary ban
*Zline: Permaban, you have to either change your IP or configure the IRC client to a proxy
Kick: To be kicked from the room, you usually can set your client to join right away. If you don't, you'll probably miss out on a convo, and you'll be labeled a noob usually.
Chanop: These guys operate the channel. They can zline, gline, and all that shiznat.
Op: This guy can do anything he wants pretty much.
Room Op: This isn't the name (The actual name runs me by) but he runs the room and can boot, kick ban, and do anything except for zline and gline.
And there you have it. Just remember don't be a *** and don't get yourself Zlined. If you want to meet up with friends, make your own room so you can kick out people that might spy on you. Even though it's a great way to communicate without hassling the **** like "invite so and so" of MSN, there are privacy issues.
*these are for servers, not rooms.
